About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the oldest continually practiced system of medicine in the world. It is used by one-third of the world’s population as a primary healthcare system. Proven over thousands of years, it is a system based on an understanding of the natural laws that influence the movement of energy (Qi or Chi) in nature and the body. Qi moves through the body in precise channels or meridians to form a complex network that connects all aspects of our body. When the Qi is not moving well, imbalance begins to surface in the form of specific symptoms on a body or emotional level.  Each meridian has a specific number of points along its trajectory. These points or “openings” provide access to the whole of the meridian and are where the hair thin acupuncture needles are inserted. The gentle insertion of the needles help restore harmony at the deepest level of the body, mind, and spirit. In the presence of this subtle yet profound intervention, symptoms often resolve and patients frequently experience deep personal transformation.

Acupuncture has been widely accepted in the U.S. and has been endorsed by The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World health Organization (WHO). While acupuncture is probably best known for its ability to alleviate pain, it is proven effective in a range of conditions. The WHO and NIH recognize the efficacy of acupuncture in treating headaches, allergies, asthma, back pain, insomnia, depression, join pain, chronic fatigue, digestive disorders, infertility, addictions emotional and stress-related issues and more.
Acupuncture is also helpful for many chronic illnesses and health concerns that have no clear origin or cause. Patients committed to a healthy lifestyle who receive ongoing acupuncture treatment for maintenance and health promotion often experience being sick less often, improved vitality and stamina, improved relationships and reductions in long term health care costs.

The first appointment is typically a 90 minute appointment. During this visit we will speak at length about your health concerns and address any questions you may have about acupuncture and the healing process. We will also discuss your health and personal histories in detail, followed by a physical examination and your first treatment

Following the initial consultation, ideally you will be seen in weekly sessions of approximately one hour for 6-8 visits. During this time, significant signs of progress will likely appear. As you experience improvement in their condition and enjoy a greater sense of ease in life, treatments may be extended to every other week, every three weeks, monthly, and seasonally.

Children can benefit from acupuncture treatment too. I have treated many children ranging in age from infants to college age. Acupuncture has proven to be effective for health and wellness in children and very often they only need a few treatments. While many children do not feel the needles at all, some other modalities, such as acupressure or moxabustion can be used. Parents are often surprised that their children look forward to coming for treatments. Children will concerns such as asthma, allergies, gastrointestinal, headaches, ADD/ADHD, headaches, eating disorders, and behavioral concerns.
